JUPITER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – Heart to Serve was the option I chose for R.E.A.C.H. Week where we served our community. It lasted Monday through Thursday and I got 20 hours of community service throughout the week.
On Monday we went to a place called Brookdale Assisted Living. This is a place that serves the elderly by taking care of them when they cannot do so themselves. We went there to help out with activities and to talk to the elderly to make them feel comforted. We did activities like music games and each person in the group went to a different resident to start a conversation. The next day we were supposed to go to a Quantum House, but they changed their plans and we did a beach cleanup instead. We went to Juno Beach and spread out in groups to look for trash. We only spent half of our time there and went back to school to help out with teachers. We helped out by either cleaning up classrooms, cleaning up the ATC, and helping set up for a middle school dance.
On Wednesday we went to Feeding Florida which gets food that would be thrown out by places like Publix, but instead, gives it to people in need. The food comes in boxes but not all of it is safe to eat by being expired or leaking. So we got into different stations where some people inspected the food making sure it was safe and if it was not safe, it was thrown out. Others took the safe food to a station that would be put into new boxes ready to be spread out to the community who needs it. Finally on Thursday, we went to House of Hope where we sorted peppers that came in from a farm. We were once again in stations where some people made sure they were safe to eat and then others packaged them.
Overall, it was a fun week where my group and I were able to serve the community.
