JUPITER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, February 15, 2023 – Today I interviewed Kaya Price about the Environmental Club she and Grace Avonda founded here at JCS.
I asked Kaya why she wanted to start an Environmental Club at JCS, and she said that we need to make a change here at JCS. “If you have not noticed, there are no recycling bins anywhere in the entire school,” she said. A few people Kaya mentioned who are in the Environmental Club here at Jupiter Christian School include Grace Avonda, Olivia Stegman, myself, Kaitlyn Vanderwerf, Mary Scott Hebert, Anna Norus, Ella Brodner, Skylar Watley, and a few other individuals. I asked Kaya what she has done to make a difference here at JCS, but she informed me they have not yet because the first meeting is on March 1 during high school lunch, so make sure you attend!
The presidents of the Environmental Club are Kaya Price and Grace Avonda. A couple of various positions in the club are the presidents which I previously mentioned. Then our vice president is Olivia Stegman. I am in the Secretary position in the Environmental Club and an event planner, which means taking notes during meetings as well as planning when and where our meetings will be. Ms. Cich is the manager and Mrs. Malone is the Co-manager. Then we have Dr. Vizcaya and Mrs. Nicolini as our advisors.
I asked Kaya what the main problem was with plastic pollution, and she responded with, “The main problem is people using single-use plastics.” The first reason you should join the Environmental Club here at JCS is that it will look great on college applications and resumes. And secondly, it will be “…helping the environment, and you are starting a change in our school,” says Kaya. You will also be getting community service hours!
To better our environment you can start by trying to stop using single-use plastics which include water bottles, sandwich bags, or any kind of wrappers. When you can, try to save those things in your lunch bag, and when you get home, recycle them! Something you can look forward to soon is the Environmental Club adding a bunch of single-use plastics in a bin, smashing them down until they are filed to the top, and then sending them off to help build houses. And we will be working with many organizations!
Remember to recycle today for a better tomorrow!
