JUPITER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – Picture this; hot asphalt rubbing on your shoes, the feeling of hitting a rubber ball back and forth, all fighting for the chance to move up. This isn’t for everyone; some people on break or lunch sit and talk, but only the best 4 Square players play.
“I have only been playing for a month,” Cam Berberian says. He has only played for a month, yet practices during break and lunch 5 days a week. This sport has recently been growing in popularity with help from new players like Cam and the new 4 square court, located south of the old one. The 5th and 6th graders used to hold up the line. Now they go on the new court, freeing up space for more 7th graders.
You may be wondering how to play. Here is how: Step 1 – Four people can play at a time (hence the name). Step 2 – Hit the ball around. If you tap it more than once, hit it out of bounds, or it lands in your square and you don’t hit it, you’re out and you must go to the back of the line. Step 3 – You move around the square in a circular motion when the person in front of you gets out. If someone gets out behind you, you don’t move. Step 4 – If you are lucky enough to make it to the 4th square you decide the rules (this may change step 2).
Cam plays 4 Square because he says it is fun. This fun and intriguing game allows kids to entertain themselves and release energy built up in the day at school. 4 Square also helps kids meet new people. At break, 6th and 7th graders interact leading kids get to know somebody new. Cam Berberian says one of the reasons he plays is for the friends.
In conclusion, 4 Square helps kids meet new people and is all around a great game. Next time you are at break or lunch and need something to do, go by the 4 Square court and jump in the game!
