JUPITER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – And the votes are in; Donald Trump has won the 2024 election. But have you ever wondered about everything that goes into an election? Mrs. Hill the 7th grade Civics teacher shared about everything that goes on behind the scenes.
For starters, why is it important to vote? Mrs. Hill stated, “I think it’s important to vote because that’s the way your voice can be heard in our government. Those people reflect our opinions and values, so I think it’s important because you want to choose the person who you feel reflects those, and that’s the way you can have your voice heard.”
Mrs. Hill also spoke about what impacts she thinks are made based on which president is elected. She stated, “I think there are different opinions and values that you focus on. Either way, I think you pray for a safe country and you pray for strong and good leadership, and either way it goes, you still hope for those things.” She also stated that, “…it’s important that you have to be 18 because a responsibility of being a citizen is being an informed educated voter. So being that age, you can inform yourself on topics and policies. You are an adult at 18, so I think that’s an important age so that you are able to form strong opinions and have a strong educated background.”
When speaking about how students’ parents vote for affects their view on politics, she stated, “I do think that, that affects it. When you grow up in your home you have those same opinions and values as your family members. I do think that is reflected in young people – their families opinions. However, I think that’s why it’s important that you are 18 because you can also reach out and educate yourself.”
Then she went on to speak about how popular and electoral college votes affect the election. She began with, “The popular vote is every single person’s vote is counted and that’s representing all of the American citizens and population.” She continued saying, “The Electoral College is where each state has a certain amount of representatives who count their votes to reflect the popular vote.”
Mrs. Hill finished speaking about how much progress America and Florida have made over time. When speaking about America’s progress she stated, “I think a lot. There are a lot of different forms of technology and different views and different things that have come up over the years, so there’s a lot that has grown. But it goes back to the Christian question about having a firm foundation and a strong belief system. That’s important too because there is a lot that changes over the years so to have that strong foundation is important.” When speaking about Florida’s progress in government, she stated, “I think the same. One year if you agree with the leadership, you’ll think there’s a lot of progress that’s been made. If you don’t agree with the leadership, you might not see it that way. Having that firm foundation and then just trying to pray for strong leadership and for a safe country is a big deal.”
And that’s how Mrs. Hill views the election and what goes on behind it.
