JUPITER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – Daylin Goldberg explains her point of view on volleyball as a new student athlete at JCS.
She believes volleyball is going great for her but tryouts took a while. Daylin enjoys volleyball because she gets to do it with a bunch of her friends, and has been practicing a great deal since last year so now she is a bit better at it. “Tryouts were fun. It was Monday through Thursday because we had to do an extra day Thursday just because of how many girls there were, and I would say it was about 1 hour and 15 minutes or 1 hour 30.”
She then went on to explain the tryout process. “Yeah! So, we mainly worked on our serving, and on the last day and a bit of Wednesday we practiced working together as a team and practiced doing an actual game, and then most of the time we were just working on our serves or doing drills and just training.” She then shared her thoughts on dress-out attire. “So, you’re mostly supposed to wear a normal shirt. Most girls just wear Jupiter Christian sports shirts and stuff…wear shorts and wear knee pads and then volleyball shoes.”
She then went on to talk about the types of teams. “There is a Black and Red team like they did last year because there are 40 something girls trying out, so they cut off a few.” Daylin struggles with getting her aim right for spiking it because when she hits it, it goes slightly to the left and the right instead of straight. She says that spiking or trying to remember not to hit the ball when someone else called it is difficult. The easiest part of volleyball for her is bumping the ball, which is hitting it over the net. Game-wise, Daylin says that the most important thing in volleyball is communication because if nobody talks to each other or calls the ball, multiple people will run and try and hit the ball which makes it hard to get a point.
Daylin decided to try out for volleyball this school year because last year she tried out but made a mistake in filling out sport’s paperwork so she wasn’t able to try out. Thankfully, this gave her the opportunity to improve her skills for this year’s volleyball team. She also shared that it is a very fun sport and all of her friends are on the team and she gets to compete with all of them. She is unsure on how many games there are this season, but she is aware that there is a game the first week of September.
For her, volleyball is not the hardest sport she’s done. Instead, the hardest sport she has done is Taekwondo. Some ways she trains to get better are bumping the ball against the wall, and to practice spiking you can hold the ball out straight from your shoulder, and hit it from there. Daylin claims that in volleyball, she is best at bumping because it is very easy.
One thing she wants to achieve is improving her aim while serving because she can hit the ball far, but sometimes it will go diagonal and to the wrong spot. Hopefully Daylin has an amazing time as a new student athlete on the volleyball team and achieves her goals this season.
