JUPITER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – Every election year is a hot topic. 2024 is no different. Is Donald Trump better for the job or Kamala Harris? What do kids think?
Two students, not to be named, were interviewed. One person with the perspective Donald Trump would be best for the presidential office and the other person with the opinion Kamala Harris would be better for the job. And, after the election with Donald Trump as the winner, they were interviewed again about their thoughts on the election results.
Trump Supporter
The Trump supporter—who throughout this article will be named MAGA—supports Trump because he thinks Trump will be better for the economy. MAGA says that Trump lowered inflation, helped the national debt, and helped middle-class and lower-class families in his previous term. He thinks Trump is going to do that again.
When asked about if Trump was a better person than Kamala Harris, MAGA said that there was no proof Trump broke the law and that Kamala Harris does not show that she is a Christian, unlike Trump. MAGA said that Trump’s last presidency proved himself to MAGA because of the social and economic policies Donald Trump pushed for while he was in office.
MAGA thinks the Democratic Party does better on climate change but that a good economy is more important. MAGA also thinks that America is spending too much on foreign wars and that Trump will cut spending to Ukraine and Israel. He also thinks that racism is not a big deal in this country and that what small steps are left to take will be made by Trump. When asked about disagreements with Trump, MAGA said that he had none.
If Trump had lost MAGA said America would become a joke and the middle class would suffer. MAGA thinks that Trump will fix Biden’s mistakes, help the economy, cut back on foreign spending, and pay the national debt. He’s excited that the country chose Donald Trump to be the next president.
Harris Supporter
The Kamala Harris supporter—who throughout this article will be called BLUE—supports Harris because of her promises to cut taxes for middle-class families, bring down costs on healthcare, and tackle climate change. On the economy BLUE thinks that Trump’s proposed tariffs would be ruinous for the economy. She thinks it would invite retaliation from U.S. business partners and raise prices on imported goods.
BLUE thinks that Kamala Harris is a better person than Trump because of Trump being found liable of multiple crimes. Harris was born in the middle class, but Trump was born into wealth—BLUE thinks this is one way how Harris is more in tune to the issues of the working class. On immigration, BLUE thinks that deporting around twenty million illegal immigrants is not the solution for immigration. She thinks it is inhumane. On healthcare, BLUE said that Trump does not have a plan for healthcare. Harris wanted to expand Medicare, even though BLUE thought that Harris should have proposed free healthcare. On climate changes BLUE thinks that Harris is better on the issue. BLUE says that Trump does not believe in climate change, and it is a serious issue that the world needs to tackle so that people don’t die.
If Kamala won BLUE thinks she would have helped disadvantaged families if elected. Now that Trump has won BLUE is worried about the direction the country will go. BLUE is worried about Project 2025, a document BLUE says was created by the Heritage Foundation, pushing extremist right-wing beliefs and plans to subvert democracy to achieve its goals. BLUE shared that a large amount of the members of Trump’s staff were affiliated with the book, including J.D. Vance, Trump’s vice president. Trump has spoken out against the book however.
What Does This Mean?
Did America make the right choice? This is the question swirling around the country. On January 20th, President Trump will officially become president.
We can be hopeful.
