JUPITER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – The age-old debate following decorating for Christmas is, should you decorate before or after Thanksgiving? Lots of people here at JCS also debate about this. Every year people make the decision about whether they should get into the Christmas Spirit early or not. Some people say that you should always decorate November 1st.
Livy Schonauer said, “I decorate right after Thanksgiving.” She waits until after Thanksgiving Day because she says, “You’ve got to give Thanksgiving at least a few days.” However, Amelia McAlees decorates before Thanksgiving because she loves Christmas. Amelia also mentioned Christmas decorations make her room prettier. Most of the people interviewed said that they decorate after Thanksgiving. The main reason for decorating after Thanksgiving is that their parents and families have always decorated after Thanksgiving. For most people they don’t have much of a choice about decorating their house.
Lots of the people I interviewed said that they enjoy having Christmas trees and lights in their bedrooms. However, Alison Siebrecht pointed out that Thanksgiving is still a holiday, so they still celebrate it and wait until it’s over to decorate for Christmas. When asked if she wishes she decorated before Thanksgiving Livia Dunagan responded, yes. Her family doesn’t believe in decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving.
Another question is, do you think it’s ok to watch Christmas movies year-round. Jael Wall said, “No, I mean it is ok, but I don’t do that. I can understand why you would, but it just doesn’t make much sense.” Others think that there is nothing wrong with watching Christmas movies year-round, however. Ms. Herrera said that her family does a Christmas in July. She does a normal December Christmas but in July her family does a little gift exchange and watches Christmas movies. Ms. Herrera loves Christmas and had a Christmas decorating party in her Bible class.
Most people decorate and start celebrating Christmas after Thanksgiving. Anyone who decorates before Thanksgiving definitely loves Christmas. Lots of people disagree about this, but I think that it’s never too early to celebrate Jesus’ birth.
