PALM BEACH COUNTY – Every year at Jupiter Christian School an event known as R.E.A.C.H. Week takes place. Students are given a list of choices for what they plan to do during R.E.A.C.H. Week, one of these options was Scuba Diving.
To start off, the first day of Scuba Diving involved going over a large quantity of paperwork that prepared the participants for what was to come. During this day students would put their gear together and disassemble it many times so that they would know how to do it come the following days. The day after was a pool day to which instructors would explain countless skills that students needed in order to get their license. For the majority of the day, students were divided into two groups that were given tasks to complete with a partner or on their own.
These challenges were then completed again in the following days. On the third day students were sent to the Blue Heron Bridge where they would participate in two dives each lasting roughly twenty minutes. During this day, students would practice ascending and descending in the water as well as mask removal and treading water. Students were provided with an extra wet suit due to the water being colder than usual. On day four, students once again went on two dives. In between each dive students would switch tanks with a partner to mimic the action that would be taken if the student was diving by themselves.
All in all, the Scuba Diving R.E.A.C.H. Week was an exciting course that allowed students to get to know their peers while also teaching them a skill that can be used throughout the course of their lives. Students may forget what they learned in school, but they will never forget the experience of this R.E.A.C.H. Week.
