First Time Wrestling

JUPITER CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, DECEMBER 2023 — I did not plan on joining the wrestling team, but I have several friends who did.

I was in the weight-room the day of tryouts for wrestling, and my friends called me over to try the sport out, little did I know that I would enjoy it and join the team. We first lined up from lightest to heaviest, and introduced ourselves, then listened to Coach Warren explain the sport for the newcomers. There were about 20 of us, and everyone was excited to get started. We warmed up thoroughly, and then the veteran wrestlers started helping those of us who were new to learn a couple moves. The second day of tryouts we learned even more moves, and got to know everyone a bit better. Coach Warren also announced that Vaughn Villaverde and Logan Fisher would be the team captains this year. On the last day of tryouts, Coach Warren asked each of us to confirm that we would be wrestling, and only one person quit. He told us what weight classes we should try to compete in, for me it was the 150lbs weight class.

Over the last couple weeks, everyone has been cutting weight, and learning new moves for their first real competitions. Coach Warren doesn’t make it easy on us, because he has high expectations, and that is why he is the best man for the job. I am looking forward to this season, and I am very glad I joined the wrestling team.

Ben has several chickens, as well as a white and grey cat named Oliver Twist. Ben volunteers at his school during chapel helping to run the audio-visual equipment as well as setting up and tearing down chapel. His favorite Bible verse is Psalms 121:1-4, "I lift my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep."
